Super Bowl Sunday Effect on Driving Fatalities

On average, there are 41% more traffic fatalities after the Super Bowl telecast than there are on a comparable Sunday during the same hours. This amounts to 24.5 fatalities versus 17.3 fatalities (p<0.001).

On the other hand, there is no significant difference in fatalities before the telecast and an 11% decrease in fatalities during the telecast -- 15.7 fatalities versus 17.7 (p=0.036).

The increase in fatalities after the telecast is largest in the losing team's state (68%), followed by neutral states (46%), and lowest in the winning team's state (6%) (p=0.003).
