Help:Contents
From StatWiki
First of all, don't worry about not using correct formatting when editing or creating pages -- someone can always fix it later. That said, we would like statwiki.org to have a standardized format for page naming and layout.
[edit] Creating a New Page
Type in a title to the box below (there is another on the Main Page or use one of the methods described below.
- Method 1: Use the input box above or on the Main Page
- Method 2: Change the web address
- First look at the web address of the page
- http://statwiki.org/statistics/Help:Contents
- Replace everything after ".../statistics/" with the new page name (separate words with underscores "_")
- For example, "http://statwiki.org/statistics/Help:Contents" would become "http://statwiki.org/statistics/My_New_Page"

[edit] Naming Pages
Try to name pages so that the main subject is the first word -- that way the page will sort better in a list and will be easier to find.
We used to encourage putting the geographic location in the page name, but now we suggest just putting the geographic location in the content. Similar stats for different geographies (countries, states, etc.) should go on the same page UNLESS there will just be too much on the page. In that case, put the location in the page name and create multiple pages.
For example, if you had data for the historical unemployment for all 50 US states for the past 50 years, it wouldn't make sense to put them all on the same page, you would want to create a separate page for each state. On the other hand, if you had data for a single year for the unemployment in each state, then it would be OK to put it all on the same page. Perhaps the title would be "Unemployment by US State" rather than "Unemployment".
The date should typically only be included in the text.
[edit] Page Layout
Right now we are using a simple page layout. Just put the statistic at the top of the content, then write==== Source ====and put the source underneath. Try to include a link to the source when possible (so that the statistic can easily be verified).
[edit] Using Wiki Markup
At the top of every wiki page (you may need to be signed in), you'll see an "Edit" link. When you click on it, you'll be able to edit the page. Wiki pages are written in Wiki Markup, which is pretty simple to learn. You can also just enter plain text and it will convert it, but it helps to know the Wiki Markup basics.
- There is a quick guide to using Wiki Markup here:
- There are some examples of how to format text here:
[edit] This is what you will typically need to know to get started:
[edit] 1. Titles are formed using "=" signs. For example, you would type:
== A Big Title ==
=== A Medium Title ===
==== A Smaller Title ====
[edit] 2. Links are created using by typing the full url or just using brackets "[" and "]".
Typinghttp://statwiki.orgwill show http://statwiki.org
[http://statwiki.org]will show [4]
[http://statwiki.org Great Stats]will show Great Stats
To link to a page within this site, use double brackets.
For instance,[[Watching TV and Sitting in Car Effect on Death From Heart Disease]]will look like Watching TV and Sitting in Car Effect on Death From Heart Disease
[edit] 3. Add a page to a category by using double brackets and typing "Category:..."
For example, typing[[Category:Health]]would add this page to the Health category.
[edit] 4. Bold and italicize using single quotes:
'''to bold this text'''like this
''to italicize this text''like this
'''''to bold and italicize this text'''''like this
[edit] 5. For bullets, use the asterick "*"
*First Bullet **Second Bullet ***etc...
- 1
- 2
- etc
- 2
