Following these four "rules" cut the risk of developing diabetes, heart attack, stroke, or cancer by 78 percent.

Among the 23,000 people studied, only 9 percent achieved all four goals.

1. Avoid Smoking 2. Exercise 3 1/2 hours a week. 3. Maintain a body mass index of less than 30 (the cutoff point for obesity). 4. Eat a diet favoring fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
