In the United States, 18% more fatal automobile accidents occur on Presidential Election Day than comparable days. In other words, Presidential Election Day indirectly causes an additional 18% traffic fatalities. This amounts to about 24 additional fatalities in the US per election. (The 95% confidence interval is 10%-26% more fatal accidents; the increase in risk persisted across ages, sexes, locations, polling hours, and whether a Democrat or Republican was elected.)
