- Number of emergency department visits due to concussions among children 8 to 19 years during 2001-2005: 502,000
- 65% were in the 14-19 age group, 35% in the 8-13 age group
- Approximately half of the ED visits for concussions were sports related
- 95,000 of the visits were related to football, basketball, baseball, soccer, or ice hockey
- During the period from 2001-2005, approximate 4 in 1000 children age 8 to 13 and 6 in 1000 children age 14-19 visited the ED for a sport-related concussion
